            None

 

MEMORIAL SERVICE

            A Memorial Service was held for SK Carroll “Bud” Howard who passed away on May 5, 2017.  SK Ed Wawiernia spoke on his behalf relating his life’s accomplishments an services to the community.  He was a member of Grand Ledge Council 7311.

           

READING OF MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING

            Minutes of previous meeting held on April 18, 2017 were read. Motion by SK Ed Wawiernia  to accept the minutes as read/corrected.  Supported by  SK Mike Shepard.     Motion passed.

                       

NAVIGATOR REPORT:

            Navigator Dave Myers reported on the Living Rosary Program held last Saturday, May 13th on the capital lawn.  Everything went very well  and there were approximately 59 Honor Guard members present.  There was a very good showing of spectators and our District Master was very well pleased.  Dave complimented Tim Perrone for the great job organizing it and we had great weather.  Overall, it was probably one of the best.  SK Tim Perrone echoed the remarks by Navigator Dave and indicated that they had great food and people actually stuck around after the program.

            Navigator Dave requested some volunteers for help with putting up flags at the St. Joseph Cemetery prior to the mass at 10:00 am.  There are around 88 flags to be put up on the entry way into the cemetery so he will need around two to three members to help.  This will be on Monday, May 29th.

            Dave also advised that the June meeting is an open meeting with a 6:00 pm social hour, and dinner following at 7:00 pm.  All ladies are invited to attend this informal open meeting.

Mexican dinners.  Also advised that June is an open meeting date and all the ladies are invited.  Dan will have his usual great food prepared for us.

                       

COMPTROLLERS REPORT:

            Comptroller Tim Perrone reported that we have 224 members.  Outlined the income and expenses for the month.  Motion by SK Pat Jacobs to accept the report.  2nd by SK John Book.  Motion passed.

                       

PURSER REPORT

            Purser Walt Ozanich handed out the financial statement from July 2016 to April 2017.  The members in attendance reviewed the financial statement.   Motion by SK Pat Jacobs to accept the report.  2nd by SK Ben King.  Motion passed

           

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

            WELLNESS   SICK COMMITTEE

                        SK Ken Watterson ran through the list of sick members as reported in our newsletter.  Additions and corrections were made.

            WINGS OF PRAYER REPORT     

                        None

 

            KCIC

                        SK Ken Watterson advised he will be representing this program at the State Convention on Mackinac Island during the State Convention in May.  He will have a product display along with brochures to hand out to those in attendance.  He is also ready to update the website and is making some minor changes.  Again this year Walt and Mary Kay Ozanich, and Bob and Jennifer Spehar will be involved to help on this program, and later this summer will have a sign wire bending party to get ready of the holiday season.

                       

HONOR GUARD REPORT

            Commander Ed Wawiernia reported that the guard will be active on May 29th at St. Joseph Cemetery for a 10:00 am mass, June 1st for the Special Olympics Opening at Central Michigan at 6:00 pm, June 4th for the 50th Anniversary Celebration at St. Jude at 1:00 pm mass, June 10th for a Diocesan  Celebration at St. Mary’s at 10:30 am  Also on June 14th for Flag Day ceremonies at Council #788 at 7:00 pm reporting time for practice, and June 24th at St. Jude in DeWitt for FaithFest.

TRUSTEES REPORT

            Trustee SK Ben King advised the bills have been reviewed and recommended payment of them.

 

NEW BUSINESS

            SK Tim Perrone made a motion for up to $250.00 for startup money for the food for the June Meeting.  2nd by SK Jay Corey.  Motion Passed.

            SK Jay Corey made a motion for $100.00 as a sponsor for Council #788 golf Outing.  2nd by SK Bob Spehar.  Motion passed.

            SK Bob Spehar read a list of the officer positions and those that have agreed to take those positions.  Final nominations and officers elected were:  Navigator SK Ken Watterson, Captain SK Dave Zerbe, Admiral SK Dave Meyers, Comptroller SK Tim Perrone, Purser SK Walt Ozanich, Pilot SK John Book, Inside Sentinel SK Fred Rocheleau, Outside Sentinel SK Ben King, 1st Year Trustee SK Bob Spehar, 2nd Year Trustee SK Hilary Goerge, 3rd Year Trustee Pat Jacobs.  There were no nominations for the position of Scribe.

                       

REPORT OF COUNCILS

            Tim Perrone reported on activities for St. Mary’s Parish.

            Dave Zerbe reported on activities for Grand Ledge Parish

            Jay Corey and John Drzik reported on activities for Council #788 and St. Gerard Parish.

                       

GOOD OF THE ORDER

                        SK Pat Jacobs spoke on the importance of Memorial Day in remembering those that gave their lives for our country.   A lot of people will be taking off and many will be staying at home.  He had a friend who was in the service and killed in Afghanistan and witnessed the Knights of Columbus Honor Guard assist on the funeral.  Ever since then he has attended the Memorial day parade and events in Grand Ledge and recommends that everyone consider going to a service or our servicemen and women.

 

KNIGHT OF THE MONTH

            Navigator Dave Myers presented a certificate to Phil Mondro for his involvement and work with the Knights of Columbus.

            Minutes of previous meeting held on April 21, 2015 were read. Motion by George Hanley  to accept the minutes as read/corrected.  Supported by Frank Brandell.  Motion passed.

                       

NAVIGATOR REPORT:

            Navigator Bob Spehar read correspondence from Sentinel Community of Faith who are looking for funds for their golf outing.  Also Bob has correspondence and information if anyone wants it on the World Meeting of Families & the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia. 

                       

COMPTROLLERS REPORT:

            Comptroller Ken Watterson reported that we still have 230 members and went over the income and deposits.  Also advised that Doug & Donna Guelette won the Chicago Trip which ended up costing $962.82 which was more than anticipated for the trip on the prize win.  Motion made by Ken to pay the additional funds for the cost of the trip.  2nd by Pat Donlin.  Motion passed.  Also brother Ken indicated that we need to release the funds of $707.00 to the Holy Cross Children’s Project.  Motion made by Jay Corey to release funds as requested.  2nd by John Book.  Motion passed.

                       

PURSER REPORT

            Purser Walt Ozanich handed out the financial statement for the month of April.  The statement was reviewed and discussed.  Motion by Jay Corey to accept the report as received / corrected.  2nd by Mike Brandell.  Motion passed.

           

           

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

            WELLNESS  SICK COMMITTEE

                        Navigator Bob Spehar reported on the passing of Leo Balcer.  George Hanley reported on the condition of Terry Austin and that he is in very poor health with Parkinson’s disease.  He would appreciate any phone calls to him at 517-894-3062.  Visits can be made for him at home at 1056 Mapletree Court, #9, Lansing, Michigan  48917.  Brother John Drzik reported on brother Jim Bleicher who is recovering from heart issues.  We need to keep him in our prayers also.

                       

            MEMBERSHIP

                        Brother Ken Watterson advised that they will have a display at Mackinac Island for the State Convention for the KCIC program

            HONOR GUARD REPORT

                        Commander Ed Wawiernia reported on the call outs coming up including the Memorial Day Mass at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Cemetary.  Also on May 31st at 9:00 am mass at St. Gerard, and June 14th for the Flag Day Ceremony at the council 788 hall.

 

TRUSTEES REPORT

            Trustee Tim Perone advised that the trustees have reviewed the bills for payment.  Admiral Dave Luedtke made a motion to pay the bills.  2nd by George Hanley.  Motion passed.

                       

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

            Second nomination of officers was made as the gavel was turned over to the Nominations Committee Chairman, Pat Donlin, who conducted the motions for nominations of officer positions.  Bob Spehar was nominated as Navigator with a motion and support.  Brother Ben King withdrew from the nomination of Captain and brother Mike Brandell was nominated with a motion and support.  Brother Jay Corey was nominated for the position of Scribe with a motion and support.  Brother Tim Perrone was nominated for the position of Comptroller with a motion and support.  Brother Walt Ozanich was nominated for the position of Purser with a motion and support.  Brother  John Book was nominated for the position of Pilot with a nomination of support.  Brother Pat Jacobs was nominated for the position of Inside Sentinel with a nomination and support.  Brother Pat Donlin was nominated for the position of Outside Sentinel with a motion and support.  Brother John Drzik was nominated for 1st year Trustee with a motion and support.  Brother Ben King was nominated for the position of 2nd year Trustee with a motion and support.  Brother George Hanley was nominated for the position of 3rd year Trustee with a motion and support.  All motions passed and the officers were elected for the fraternal year of 2015 – 2016.

 

NEW BUSINESS

            Brother Jay Corey made a motion for the Assembly to sponsor a hole for the Council 788 golf outing on June 27th in the amount of $100.00.  Supported by brother Mike Brandell.  Motion passed.

            Brother Walt Ozanich brought up for discussion the need for increasing our attendance at our meetings.  The Snack Program should be started up again.  A discussion was held and it was decided that the Snack Program at meetings will begin again with the July meeting.

            A discussion was also held regarding having a social meeting including the wives other than just the one in June of each year.  No decision was reached.

            Navigator Bob Spehar advised that there will be a meeting of all elected officers at his home on June 24th at 6:00 pm to go over next year’s programs.  Hotdogs and beverages will be served.  He lives at 957 Kingsbridge in Grand Ledge.

                       

REPORT OF COUNCILS

            Brother Tim Perrone reported on St. Mary’s where they hosted a reception after the Living Rosary which went very well.  They are also planning a pancake breakfast on Sunday, May 31st that everyone is invited to.

            Brother John Drzik reported on the Cristo Rey fiesta which is coming up the weekend of May 22-24th.  This is usually a very good event for them.  Raffle tickets for this event are behind our bar if you want one.  Also, 788 is having their Annual Golf Outing on June 27th and everyone is invited.  This benefits the St. Gerard Youth Group and is only $60.00 per person.  Golfing and dinner is at Royal Scot.

            Brother Mike Brandell also indicated that there is a cookout for the young adults on Memorial Day.

            Brother Pat Jacobs from Grand Ledge reported advised that they have an ordained deacon.  The Relay for Life is coming up along with a golf outing and an adopt a highway program all this past weekend.  Also advised of the Eaton County Housing Commission having a golf outing which is coming up.

                       

GOOD OF THE ORDER

            Captain George Hanley gave a short presentation on the rosary.  Navigator Bob Spehar advised of the social meeting including the wives on June 16th.  6:00 pm is the social hour with dinner to follow at 6:30 along with a short meeting.

 

KNIGHT OF THE MONTH

            Navigator Bob Spehar dedicated the Knight of the Month to everyone who stepped up to help out as an officer this year.

NAVIGATOR REPORT:

            Navigator Bob Spehar reported on Council #788 Grand Knight Ken Morrison and read a letter that was provided to him by State Advocate Bill Chasse.  It will be at least five weeks before Ken is able to work again.  Ken needs our help and prayers and donations are being accepted.  Navigator Bob Spehar went over the fraternal activities and expenditures to Supreme.

                       

COMPTROLLERS REPORT:

            SK Ken Watterson advised that the volunteer hours of service were over 9000 hours which is very good and that we currently have 229 members.  We have approximately $900.00 in deposits this month and $535.00 in Holy Cross donations which needs to be passed onto them.  We also have $505.00 in the sword fund.  We also received a $100.00 donation from DD Dave Meyers.

 

                       

PURSER REPORT

            Purser Walt Ozanich handed out the current financial report and it was reviewed.  Motion by DD Dave Myers to approve the report.  Supported by Admiral Dave Luedtke.  Motion passed.  Purser Walt Ozanich also reported on the KCIC program and he will have a final report next month.  There are no outstanding bills from other councils on this program, however, we may have just a few expenses which should be less than $100.00.  Also reported that we will have a KCIC wrap up meeting here at Council #788 on February 25th.

 

           

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

            WELLNESS  SICK COMMITTEE

                        Captain George Hanley reported on Terry Austin who has not been to meetings.  He is completely housebound at this time and cannot get out.  We need to replace him as inside sentinel.

                        Comptroller Ken Watterson  reported that his wife Sandy was hospitalized in Florida as she was having difficulty in breathing.  This happened on their vacation and she was in the hospital five days.  She got a clean bill of health and is now on steroids for breathing and is doing very well.

                        Outside Sentinel SK Ben King reported that his uncle recently passed away.

            HONOR GUARD REPORT

                        SK Ed Wawiernia reported on the call out dates that are up-coming which include March 1st at St. Mary’s, March 8th at St. Gerard Blue Mass, March 14th at Grand Ledge St. Patrick’s Parade at 1:00 pm, March 22nd at St. Gerard 9:00 am mass, May 25th for the Memorial Mass on the Capitol Lawn, May 30th for the Living Rosary at the Capitol at 1:00 pm, and May 31st at St. Gerard 9:00 am mass,

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

            None

 

TRUSTEES REPORT

            Trustee John Drzik advised that the bills have been reviewed and are okay to pay.

 

NEW BUSINESS

            Captain George Hanley made a motion to move the March meeting to the fourth Tuesday due to the St. Patrick’s Party at Council #788 hall.  Supported by Ben King.  Discussion was held.  Motion passed.

            Navigator Bob Sephar requested a Nominations Committee for officers next year.  SK Pat Donlon volunteered to head up the committee.

            SK Ed Wawiernia made a motion for the assembly to donate $100.00 for Ken Morrison.  Supported by Scribe Jay Corey.  Discussion held.  Motion withdrawn as it was decided that individual contributions would be more appropriate and it will be placed in the newsletter for all to contribute as they see fit.

                       

REPORT OF COUNCILS

            Grand Ledge -  Reported that they have finished with the traveling ICON.  Their fish frys are starting up and all are welcome.

            St. Mary’s  -  No report.

            Lansing Council #788    -  Admiral Dave Luedtke reported on the fish frys that are on-going.  Also that they are having a Craft Beer Party on February 21st from 7-9pm for a $20.00 admission.  The 22nd of February they are having a Chili Cook Off and Daytona 500 party starting at noon.  There is also a seminarian dinner up-coming at St. Gerard and a Blue Mass and St. Gerard Breakfast on March 8th. 

                       

GOOD OF THE ORDER

            Captain George Hanley discussed lent and the days and nights that Jesus spent in the desert during this time.  This was for 40 days and nights where he was tempted by the devil.  George compared this to our soldiers at Valley Forge and how cold it was and that nothing now compares this to us here.  This relates to our veterans who come home to nothing or some that lose what they have.  We should all keep charity in our minds for this time of the year.

            The minutes of the previous meeting held on December 16, 2014 were read.  Motion made by Admiral SK Dave Luedtke to approve the minutes as read and/or corrected.  Supported by Pilot SK John Book.  Motion passed.

                       

NAVIGATOR REPORT:

            Navigator SK Bob Spehar handed out white tickets and advised the tickets were for a first of the year drink on the Navigator.  One drink only.  Also advised there will be an exemplification on April 10&11th in Davison.  There are only 30 rooms available at the hotel so if you are going make your reservations early.  Also, there will be a dinner / dance in Kalamazoo on February 14th if anyone cares to go.  See him for more information.

                       

COMPTROLLERS REPORT:

            Comptroller Ken Watterson reported that we have 234 members and another member is reportedly coming in which will make us at 235 members.  SK Ken reported on deposits made.  Motion by Admiral SK Dave Luedtke to accept the comptrollers report.  Supported by Scribe SK Jay Corey.  Motion passed.

 

                       

PURSER REPORT

            Purser Walt Ozanich handed out the July to December 2014 financial statement.  The report was reviewed and discussed.  It was decided that the sword fund will be a restricted fund.  SK Walt also discussed the KCIC Program which went very well.  Our current balance is $3,572.96 as of December 31, 2014.  There will be some additional income and expenses.  Motion by SK Ed Wawiernia to approve the purser report.  Supported by Admiral SK Dave Luedtke.  Motion passed.

           

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

            WELLNESS  SICK COMMITTEE

                        Comptroller Ken Watterson advised that he publishes the sick list every month in the newsletter.  Some names have dropped off and individual members of the assembly noted sick and distressed brothers.  Trustee SK Frank Brandell was welcomed back and he is getting along ok and is improving on a daily basis.

                       

            MEMBERSHIP

                        No report other than to report Arnie Rios who belongs to Cristo Rey wants to transfer to our assembly and will be doing so shortly.

            Admiral SK Dave Luedtke advised that we have always given money to the Francis O’Donnell project in the past.  Made a motion to donate $100.00 to the Francis O’Donnell fund.  Supported by Scribe SK Jay Corey.  Motion passed.

            Admiral SK Dave Luedtke advised that we also always put in a full page ad for the exemplification and made a motion for a full page ad for $100.00 for the up-coming exemplification.  Supported by Pilot SK John Book.  Motion passed.

            Navigator SK Bob Spehar advised that the Michigan State Council has sent a letter to sell ads for their ad book for the State Convention in May.  Motion by Admiral SK Dave Luedtke to buy a half page ad for $145.00.  Supported by SK Pat Donlon.  Motion carried.

                       

REPORT OF COUNCILS  

            Trustee SK Tim Perrone reported that St. Mary’s provided baby items and a crib collected through the Advent season to the Shared Pregnancy Program.  Also, they have had great success.

            Trustee SK John Drzik reported on the Family Fun Night for Council #788 scheduled for January 23rd with burgers and hotdogs.  Also the LCA is putting on a Super Bowl Party on Sunday February 1st.  We will be having a fish fry on February 6th and a Fat Tuesday Dinner on February 17th.  Also our meeting because it is on the same day as Fat Tuesday, will be held in the basement conference room.  We will also be having fish frys every Friday after Ash Wednesday during the Lenten season.  There is also a major degree 2nd & 3rd to be held at the council hall on February 7th at 10:30 am.  No first degree.  Candidates should be here by 10:00 am.

            Grand Ledge council reported that they are having their annual Wild Game Dinner on Thursday, February 5th at St. Michaels.

           

GOOD OF THE ORDER

            SK Pat Donlon brought up the St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt that he just attended for a retreat weekend.  It is a great facility and he encourages everyone to attend a retreat if possible at that center.

            Admiral SK Dave Luedtke advised that on February 8th there will be the annual World Marriage Day Breakfast at 9:00 am at St. Gerard Fellowship Hall.  Last year 80 couples attended and more are expected this year so help is needed.  Please see him after the meeting if you can help on this project.  You will need to report to St. Gerard around 8:00 am.

            Acting Navigator Captain George Hanley reported that there were no communications or bills received.

                       

COMPTROLLERS REPORT:

            Comptroller Ken Watterson reported that we have 234 members.  He has made $1,260.00 in deposits which includes dues and Holy Cross Contributions.  Dues notices have been sent out and he has written $536.00 in vouchers.  SK Ken reported on the KCIC Program and that they have pretty much concluded this year’s program. Most of the orders are now all in and that this was our first year on this project.  Brother Ken handed out and expense & income report and it was reviewed and discussed.  There may be some additions and/or corrections when everything is all said and done, but for the most part we did very well for our first year.  Brother Ken thanked everyone who helped on the project especially his wife Sandy.  Scribe Jay Corey indicated that this was very good for our first year and that Ken and his crew should be commended for all the hard work they did.  SK Gene Murawski made a motion to accept the report comptroller’s report.  Supported by Admiral Dave Luedtke.  Motion Passed.

                       

PURSER REPORT

            Purser Walt Ozanich handed out the financial statement for both the assembly and the KCIC accounting.  This was reviewed and discussed by all.  Motion by Pilot John Book to accept the report.  Supported by SK Glenn Barry.  Motion Passed.

            Trustee Tim Perrone advised that they have reviewed the bills and recommend payment.

           

REPORT OF COUNCILS

            SK Tim Perrone reported on events taking place at St. Mary’s.  They had good Christmas sales on the Christmas Cards and the pancake breakfast went over very well.  They also brought a crib filled with supplies every Sunday.  Those supplies will be given to the Shared Pregnancy program.

            Trustee John Drzik reported that Council #788 is having a New Year’s Eve party and everyone is welcome.  This is an informal party where you bring a dish to pass.  January 3rd is the Wild Game Squirrel Hunt followed by the Rabbit Hunt on January 10th.  We are having a Walleye Dinner on Friday, January 9th from 4-7 pm.  January 10th there is a blood drive at St. Gerard for the Lions Club.  January 10th is also the casino trip for the 4th degree to Firekeepers in Battle Creek.  We are also having a Pinewood Derby on January 10th beginning at 2 pm with registration.  We are having a St. Gerard Breakfast on Sunday January 11th and our Wild Game Dinner is on Saturday, January 17th.  The Right To Life  Bus Trip is on January 21st and it is $250.00 per couple.  On February 7th there will be a major degree of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

            DD Dave Myers reported on Grand Ledge that one of their own will become a Deacon very soon.  They have given over $12,000 to various charities in the Lansing area and $500 to the generator project.  The first Thursday in January is their Wild Game Dinner.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER

            SK Ken Watterson reported that John Gordon contacted him regarding the Firekeepers Casino Trip coming up.  That is on January 10th and it is $40.00 per person.  29 tickets have been sold out of 56.

            SK Gene Murawski advised there is a major degree in Charlotte on January 24th.  Also the fish frys start on January 23rd in Mason.

            SK George Hanley advised that this Christmas is the 100th anniversary of troops on the ground from years past and at that time Hitler was a Corporal.

            Former Master Glenn Barry was recognized and thanked for his services.

NAVIGATOR REPORT:

            Navigator Bob Spehar welcomed new member Patrick Jacobs to our meeting and also gave out a sword and cape to SK Patrick Jacobs who is joining the Honor Guard.  Also announced that we received the Patriotic Civic Award and that SK Ken Watterson received the Newsletter Of The Year Award.  District 2 received the rest of the Provincial Awards.  Navigator Bob also thanked everyone who turned out for the Veteran’s Day Program with speaker Dick Thelen.  There were 104 guests and we made a profit of $1,050.00.  It was a very good evening and even WLNS-TV6 was on hand to film it and put on the channel 6 news.

                       

COMPTROLLERS REPORT:

            SK Ken Watterson advised we have 234 members and deposited $978.92 from the Francis Fest.  They netted $1,200 for the Francis Fest and also a billboard check came in for the amount of $150.00.  SK Ken outlined the expenses for the month.  Motion by Outside Sentinel SK Ben King to approved the report.  Supported by Pilot SK John Book.  Motion passed.

                       

PURSER REPORT

            Purser SK Walt Ozanich handed out the report and it was reviewed by the membership.  Our balance is $7,708.31 with expenses this month being $1,814.91.  All accounts balance.  Discussion held on the report.  SK Walt also reported on the KCIC bookkeeping.  Our income was $18,964.30.  Our expenses was $13,458.71.  Our current balance is $5,505.32   A discussion was held on the KCIC program.  Motion by Admiral PGK Dave Luedtke to accept the pursers report.  Supported by Pilot John Book.  Motion carried.

            WELLNESS   SICK COMMITTEE

                        Mike Brandell who is the grandson to Frank Brandell gave a report on the status of Frank.  He is being moved to a rehabilitation center in Okemos and Frank appreciates all the prayers.  Also it was noted by Ed Wawiernia that Charlie Zimmerman was in an accident and just left the hospital.  He is on the mend.

                        Commander Ed Wawiernia reported that the Honor Guard will be called out for the Family Mass at St. Gerard on November 30th for the 9:00 am mass.  That is all that is on the schedule until March 2015.  SK Ed also reported on Frank Brandell and how Applebee’s delivered a steak to him at St. Lswrence.

                       

            KCIC REPORT

                        SK Ken Watterson reported that they have received 119 orders and have $25,199.00 in gross sales.  Orders continue to come in and everything is going very well.  The committee just met recently at his place of business to put together 1,000 yard signs.

                       

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

            Scribe Jay Corey brought up the unfinished business of the meeting location in February 2015 as it conflicts with the Fat Tuesday Dinner that Council 788 is having.  Suggested meeting downstairs at the regular time of 7:30 pm.  Motion by SK Ed Wawiernia to have the meeting downstairs.  Supported by Captain George Hanley.  Motion passed.

GOOD OF THE ORDER

            Navigator Bob Spehar reported that the District Social Meeting will be held on January 10, 2015.  The Doc Eagan Christmas Party will be on December 14th at council #788 from 2-4 pm.  Santa will make an appearance and everyone is welcome to bring their kids and grandkids.  A video presentation was presented showing our Veteran’s Day Program from channel 6 as well as a video honoring our soldiers past and present.

 

           

REPORT OF COUNCILS

            SK Tim Perrone reported on St. Mary’s and that there pancake dinner went over very well.

            Grand Knight Ken Morrison reported that on November 23rd they will be decorating council 788’s hall for Christmas.  They are having a Mexican Dinner on December 5th and will be lighting the Christmas Tree and singing carols.  December 9th they are having a First Degree prior to the start of their meeting.  On December 13th the Ladies Auxiliary are having their annual Christmas Dinner & Auction and there will be a St. Gerard parish breakfast on December 14th after the 7:30, 9:00, and 11:00 am masses.  There will be a New Year’s Eve party on December 31st and everyone is asked to bring a dish to pass.  Starting the new year there will be a Walleye Dinner on January 9th, and the LCA is having their annual Wild Game Dinner on Saturday, January 17th and tickets are now available.

            DD Dave Meyers reported on the status of Grand Ledge in which they have a Spelling Bee on November 20th.  On Thursday night they are at Logan’s Steakhouse and a percentage of the sales that night for members of Knights of Columbus go to their council.  On December 6th there is the Grand Ledge Holiday Parade, and the Free Throw Contest is being held on December 7th.

FAITHFUL FRIAR REPORT

            Friar Father Tom Thompson introduced himself and reminded us of God’s love for us all.  Advised that there is a Peace Pole gathering in E. Lansing tomorrow from 8:30 – 9:30 am.  This is a wooden pole that is erected in East Lansing for the spreading of peace and written in several languages.  This is open to the public and everyone is invited to attend and to pray for peace.

           

NAVIGATOR REPORT:

            Navigator Bob Spehar reported that the Francis Fest is upon us and is going to be held on Saturday, September 28th beginning with a craft show at 10:00 am.  Tickets for the main prize and entry are still available and there are some behind the bar at Council 788.  Also the due dates for the advertising in the Fall exemplification book is coming up. 

           

COMPTROLLERS REPORT:

            Comptroller Ken Watterson reported that we have the same amount of members which is 235.  We have a total income of $191.00 and total expenses of $185.50.

 

           

PURSER REPORT

            Purser Walt Ozanich handed out the financial report and it was reviewed by the membership.  A discussion was held and Pilot John Book brought up the fact that St. Andrew should not be a restricted fund.  That will be changed.  Also reviewed the KCIC bookkeeping report.  Discussion held.  Motion by Admiral Dave Luedtke to approve the purser report.  Supported by PGK Mike Schaefer.  Motion passed.

            HONOR GUARD REPORT

                        Commander Ed Wawiernia reported on events that they have had and up-coming events for the calling out of the Honor Guard.  They attended the 9/11 service in downtown Lansing and it was a very nice service.  On September 28th a Mass of Thanksgiving will be held at St. Mary’s at 11:00 am.  This will be done by new Bishop Steve Raica.  Also reported that SK Joe Kobus is turning in his red cape.

 

            KCIC REPORT

                        Comptroller Ken Watterson reported that the KCIC program is going very well and they have received 29 orders thus far.  They have taken in $8,495.00.  They have $727.00 shipping fees collected and the cost of the product is $11,274.00.  $1,132.00 has been given to Purser Walt Ozanich.  There was one credit card transaction which Ken ran through his business.  There is a charge for that which he will get reimbursed.  The total expenses for the month are $1,201.64.

                        Admiral Dave Luedtke reported that he and Ken went to Charlotte to observe the KCIC signs being built.  The group taught Ken and himself about the process and they hope to get the metal frames for only $.38 cents each.  It took about 1 ½ hours to put together 500 signs.  A discussion was held. 

 

            FRANCIS FEST

                        Admiral Dave Luedtke reported on the Francis Fest and reported that things are progressing very well.  There will be 18 booths for the craft show and the food has been discussed.  They will be meeting at 6:00 pm on Friday, September 26th to set up, and your help and support is needed.  There still are raffle tickets available and it looks like only 100 or so tickets will be sold so your odds of winning are good.  They are going to offer the trip to Chicago as indicated, or you can take $500 in cash.  We need everyone and their friends to come and support the event.         

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

            The budget was taken off the table and reviewed for approval by the membership.  A discussion was held.  Motion by SK Ed Wawiernia to approve the budget.  Supported by SK Ben King.  Motion passed.

 

NEW BUSINESS

            The chalice fund was discussed and we have 2 chalice’s left.  Motion by Admiral Dave Luedtke to buy 6 more chalices.  Supported by SK Ben King.  Motion passed.

 

            Comptroller Ken Watterson discussed the wire bending party that he and Admiral Dave Luedtke went to in Charlotte.  At that time they learned of a Golf Outing for the benefit of the Guardian Angel Suitcase Fund for foster kids.  It is to be held on September 20th and a discussion was held on the suitcase fund.  Motion by Comptroller Ken Watterson to donate $50.00 to the Suitcase Fund.  Supported by Scribe Jay Corey.  Discussion held. It was decided that this would be a one-time donation. Amended motion to increase the amount to $100.00.  Supported by Scribe Jay Corey.  Motion passed. 

            A discussion was held on putting a full page ad in the exemplification book.  Motion by Admiral Dave Luedtke to place a full page ad in the book for $100.00.  Supported by Captain George Hanley.  Motion passed.

            Comptroller Ken Watterson had a video to present on the flag.  However the video would not work and therefore it was rescheduled until the next meeting.

 

REPORT OF COUNCILS

            DD Dave Myers reported  that St. Michaels is supporting the Military Chaplins Fund.  Also they are having a K of C membership drive the weekend of October 11th & 12th.  They are also trying out a fund raiser with Logan’s Steakhouse wherein they received 20% of sales for a particular day.  They also won a bid for a ton of potatoes and they are looking to see to whom they can donate them to.

            Trustee Tim Perrone reported that they recently had a pancake breakfast to raise funds and are also collecting donations for Shared Pregnancy.  SK Tim also thanked the Honor Guard for their recent presence at St. Mary’s.

            Trustee John Drzik reported that Council 788 is having a Walleye Dinner on September 19th, a Fish Fry on October 3rd, the Cash Bash on October 11th, and a Steak Fry on October 17th.  Also reported on the scrap metal drive which is going very well and has been extended through September.  The Doc Eagan Christmas party is scheduled for December 14th.  Comptroller Ken Watterson also addressed the Doc Eagan party and that he needs help to make it work.  He would like someone to take the point position as he has a lot going with the KCIC program this year.

            Navigator Bob Spehar read a communication from Rita Johnson for Creighton Model.  Letter received from St. Gerard requesting any donations for their school auction.  Also, our Assembly and Assembly 3334 are sponsoring a bus trip to Firekeepers Casino on January 10, 2015.  We will sell tickets and split the profit which will be based on ticket sales.  Navigator Bob reported that it is expensive for some people to join the Honor Guard which can cost over $500.  He is asking that you check the box with payment of your dues, for a donation to help defray the cost for those needing assistance and wanting to join the Honor Guard.   Also he is instituting a Recognition Award for attendance at events and recruiting 2 members in a one year period of time.  The newsletter was also discussed as we are going to try and get it out in the printed form.  Approx. cost is around $1,500 per year.  As of this point, there is no start date and further discussion is needed.

           

 

 

COMPTROLLERS REPORT:

            Comptroller Ken Watterson reported that we have 235 members and we deposited $225.  Of that, $25 was for dues and $200 for the Francis Fest donations.  Comptroller Ken has submitted vouchers for review and outlined requested payments to individuals and other expenses.  Total expenses are $1,029.92.

           

PURSER REPORT:

            Purser Walt Ozanich handed out the financial statement and it was reviewed by the membership.  A discussion was held on increasing the amount for the chalice fund.  Further action will be discussed at the next meeting.  Motion by Admiral Dave Luedtke to approve the report.  Supported by Trustee Frank Brandell.  Motion carried.

            HONOR GUARD REPORT

                        Commander Ed Wawiernia reported that he and Bob Spehar recently went to Jackson for a meeting.  There are some changes that they will go over at the next practice.  There will be no swords during the gift presentation and they also are instituting a different way of carrying the swords.  Inspections will now be done by the Commander.  Commander Ed reported on the call outs which will be 8/31 at St. Gerard 9:00 am mass with a report time of 8:30 am, 9/7 at St. Mary’s with a 10:30 report time, nothing in October, 11/9 at St. Mary’s with a 10:30 report time, and 11/30 at St. Gerard 9:00 am mass.  Report time is 8:30 am.  Finally he has not heard anything about the 9/11 program.

            KCIC REPORT

                        Comptroller Ken Watterson reported that the KCIC bookkeeping is up to date.  Orders are coming in and they have donated one starter kit to Council #788 for use of the building and parking lot for housing the trailer.  The inventory is being ordered on consignment and everything seems to be progressing very good and will be stored in the trailer on the parking lot of Council #788.  Commander Ed Wawiernia suggested having a booth at the Francis Fest.

NEW BUSINESS

            The proposed budget was handed out to the membership by Navigator Bob Sephar.  A discussion was held on the budget.  Motion to table the budget till the meeting in September made by Admiral Dave Luedtke.  Supported by Pilot John Book.  Motion carried.

           

TRUSTEES REPORT

            Trustee Frank Brandell advised they have reviewed the bills and recommend payment.  Motion by SK Ed Wawiernia to pay the bills.  Supported by SK Dave Meyers.  Motion carried.

 

           

GOOD OF THE ORDER

            Motion by Admiral Dave Luedtke to put the $500.00 from St. Andrews Council into the general fund.  Supported by Pilot John Book.  Motion carried.

            Navigator Bob Spehar advised he has been asked by the Worthy Master to place a ½ page ad in the provincial book at a cost of $55.00.  Motion by Admiral Dave Luedtke to place ad as requested.  Supported by Pilot John Book.  Motion carried.

            The last Admirals Ball is the last one that they will have.  We are looking to replace it and if anyone has any ideas please contact Navigator Bob Spehar.

            Motion by GK Ken Morrison of Council 788 for $100 for the St. Gerard Auction.  Supported by Admiral Dave Luedtke.  Motion carried.

 

REPORT OF COUNCILS

            Trustee John Drzik reported that council 788 is have a casino trip to Firekeepers in Battle Creek on August 23rd.  Tickets are behind the bar.  There is a family mass at St. Gerard on 8/31 at the 9:00 am mass.  September 7th is the St. Gerard parish picnic.  Approximately 600 people show up.  It will start at noon and run until 2:30 pm.  A first degree will be held at council 788 on Tuesday, September 9th at 7:30 pm.  September 14th is the first St. Gerard Knights Breakfast after the 7:30, 9:00, and 11:00 am masses.  Council 788 will be having a walleye dinner on September 19th from 4-7 pm.  Also, the LCA will have its annual Cash Bash on October 11th and tickets are behind the bar.

            Comptroller Ken Watterson reported that the Doc Eagan Christmas Party will be on December 7th at Council #788.

            SK Ray Merrill reported that Grand Ledge is having a Fun Fest this coming weekend.

            Navigator Bob Spehar reported that the officer installation will be held at St. Gerard on August 22nd starting with a mass at 7 pm.  All officers should be present for this installation.

 

KNIGHT OF THE MONTH

            Navigator Bob Spehar named SK Jay Corey at the Knight of the Month and presented him with a certificate.

 

CLOSING CEREMONY

            Comptroller Ken Watterson presented a film on Father Dupont for his devotion to members of the military during the Korean war often times serving mass on the hood of a jeep.  There is a memorial for him in Washington DC.

Motion that Assembly 0496 accept the franchise for the Keep Christ in Christmas program for the state of Michigan councils and assemblies, from Don Klingshirn of the Charlotte KofC Council, was made, supported and approved.  [During discussions after the motion and support, it was noted that the Charlotte KofC Council earned about $4K serving about 80 councils in the state.]

Motion that Assembly 0496 establish a separate bank account [specifically at 5th 3d Bank] to support the newly established KCIC program was made, supported and approved.  [A spirited discussion took place regarding the absolute need for at least 3 signers for checks for this new account.  Other discussions agreed that the new program would have appropriate checks and balances, including review of records by the Assembly Trustees. The newly appointed slate of officers will execute the new program and its policies and practices.]

New Business:      Motion to spend $200 as Assembly 0496 share of the costs for food at the Annual Open Meeting and Awards meeting was made, supported, and approved.

FN noted that Color Corps Recertification had taken place at the Officers Installation and passed out appropriate cards.

 

FN noted that the State Council will be attending a Memorial Mass at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit at 10am on 11.11.2012.

 

FN noted that District II Annual District Social Meeting would take place on Saturday, 11.10.2012 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Michigan Center.  Mass will be at 4:30.  After mass, there will be a SHORT meeting followed by a meal and dancing.  Cost: $40 a couple [$25 for single]. This is an authorized expense for the Assembly.  Please RSVP to our FN before 11.02.2012.

 

FN noted that a 4th Degree Evening of Reflection will be held at St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt. Please RSVP to our Faithful Comptroller if you plan to attend.

 

FN noted that he had received a letter from the State Charitable Gaming Authority permitting Assemblies 0496 and 3334 to secure a license for Stacks Hold ‘em event[s].

Motion was made, seconded and approved to spend $75 to purchase a full page ad in the Provincial Souvenir Booklet for the next Exemplification.

Discussion of the 2d/3d Degree on Nov 3d at St. Mary’s Cathedral.

 

Motion was made, seconded, and approved to donate an amount to rent Keep Christ in Christmas billboard for 30 days.

 

Motion was approved to proceed on a 50/50 basis with Assembly 3334 to participate in a Texas Hold‘em fundraiser at “Stacks” on Hagedorn Blvd.  Volunteers are encouraged to sign up on the Assembly website.

 

Members were informed of the 2013 Exemplification which will take place at the Lexington Hotel in Lansing on the Saturday after Easter, 2013.

 

Good of the Order:

A CD honoring a patriotic “Flagman” who furnished flags along the path of a deceased serviceman in Kentucy.

 

A slide show was presented of a patriotic tribute conducted at Lambeau Fief in Green Bay. WI.

 

Worthy Master Remarks: 

Thanks from outgoing Worthy Master, Dennis Henderson, who noted continuing need for fundraisers, and programs, and the need to build up the color corps.  The new Worthy Master for District II is George Waldrick from Jackson Assembly.
